Why does Lady Liberty Walk?

The inspiration of Frederic Bartholdi a French men so enamored by America's victorious effort over slavery drove him to create Lady Liberty. The actions of courage that forever changed America and the world encased in a colossal statue lighting the entrance to a new world. The gift from one nation's people to another, over 120,000 people donating to the herculean effort.

The robed woman fashioned after the Roman goddess of freedom, Liberitas, the Latin word for freedom. Liberitas signified the freedom of action, freedom from restraint, independence, rights and forms of personal and social liberty. An ancient Roman religion that began over two thousand years ago that revered virtues of liberty, hope, justice, piety, courage and many other values.

This grand lady, a gift from the world's citizens bearing the torch ofliberty. The beacon of enlightenment to guide all people. Aloft she holds the light that guides our nation on the path with the virtues of liberty. She's not just a lighthouse of the world, nor a neon sign marking our shores but a symbol to spark the causes of freedom in all nations.

Atop Liberty is the spiked tiara a symbol depicting the seven continents and the seven seas, the courage, the strength, the spires turned toward heaven to acknowledge from where freedom rains. A banded circle from which the rays of liberty's light shines meant to encompass us all. A crown heavily weighted as if the world rest upon her mind.

Held close to her heart is the keystone shape tablet of justice. Firm within her grasp she lays it open as to show that without laws the arch of freedom will fall. Inscribed upon her tablet is the day we proclaimed our independence from oppression. The birth of this nation, having the foundation of laws written within the Constitution.

Seen from above her feet protrude from under her robe in sandals she is walking forth. The broken chains from the bonds of slavery and oppression are laid at her feet. She walks with her torch held high so that the light of liberty will always shine on the path of freedom.

We as Americans are walking symbols of freedom within our country and throughout the world. What made us great is not our ability to boast, but our willingness to fight for what we believe. To have pride in ones country is different than being proud. The arrogance of people of the United States is seen as a failing to which some would use as a reason to bring us down.

The foundation of our nation is held within the power of God. The further we stray from that belief the more likely we will fall. To walk in the light with quiet poise
is not weak, if you “walk softly and carry a big stick”.
